The 1947 Project

Boom! What else was going on in 1947?

Came across an interesting blog - if you're into in Los Angeles history

The 1947 Project:

"Los Angeles in 1947 was a social powderkeg. War-damaged returning soldiers
were threatened by a new kind of independant female, who in turn found her
freedoms disappearing as male workers returned to the factories. These conflicts
worked themselves out in dark ways. The Black Dahlia is the most famous victim
of 1947's sex wars, but hardly the only one. The 1947project seeks to document
this pivotal year in L.A., through period reporting and visits to the scenes as
they are today. "

I always like to learn a little about the history of the area I live in- or that I'm visiting (see our Greenwich Village excursion earlier this month.) I work in one of the oldest buildings in Hollywood and I think my apartment was built in or before the 1920s.

I just hope I don't find out that there was a vicious 1947 sex crime committed in my living room!

Found the 1947 Project via www.lablogs.com And they found it here at LA Observed.

Where is the Love?

I'll bet ya that Michael Schiavo and Terri Schiavo's parents all love her very much. Nobody's saying THAT though.

Who needs another opinion about Terri Schiavo?

But I like this point from Tony Pierce:

"... in his defense of signing the bill mr bush said, 'This is a complex case with serious issues. But in extraordinary circumstances like this, it is wise to err on the side of life."'

the war in iraq wasnt a complex case with serious issues and extrodinary circumstances? was it not wise to err on the side of life in that matter instead of invade a country because of their alleged weapons of mass destruction which turned out not to be there? "

Well, I guess it depends on who you ask.

But that's a digression to the Perpetual War, the other slow-motion tragedy in our American lives.

The only machine the Republicans don't want Terri unhooked from is their goddamned propaganda machine.

When she dies, they will blame the liberals forever- the slide to fascism will claim a martyr- the hypocrisy about the sanctity of marriage, their leaked talking points memo about how to "spin" Terri Schiavo for political points, the coming assault on ALL judges, Bush's own Texas law that contradicts his "moral" action yesterday- none of that will register - Terry is a prop for Tom Delay. They can't wait for her to die, really. She will be a very useful corpse.

It's telling that the second story on LA's right wing KFI-AM's hourly news broadcast this morning was about this nurse that claims that Michael Schiavo wants his wife "the b.i.t.c.h." to die (Clicking on the link lets you know that not even Terri's parents sought this woman's dubious testimony in their effort to save their daughter's life- and KFI-AM featured this woman prominently on the morning news- I've got to reset my alarm clock to fucking BUZZ)- The nurse claims that Terry could speak. The words she allegedly spoke were "Mommy", "pain", and "help me."

Interpret that how you will, if it's even true.

Thomas Paine's Apartment

We're still sorting through the pictures we took on our trip to New York. We love American history, so we made a point of stopping by the final home of LIBERAL Founding Father Thomas Paine at 59 Grove Street in the Village.

The place is now a gay bar called Marie's Crisis Cafe- I don't know who Marie was, but the "Crisis" comes from Paine's The Crisis Papers . Turns out the building itself isn't original- it burned down once, but there are remnants of the original structure inside.

You'll notice the gay rights flag in the upper window next door- what you can't make out is the anti-Bush sign... viva la revolucion!

One of the guide books stated that Paine was shunned for being an atheist at the end of his life, but he was actually a deist. I'll have to read up on deism. Won't you join me, here?

How American- one of our FOUNDING FRIGGIN' FATHERS was shunned for not worshipping Jesus.

Friday Night, not quite so drunk...

Second night of the show- if you are in New York you should come and see it. Here's a link... Hard Right by David Barth

Tomorrow is the second anniversary of the invasion of Iraq. We're planning on joining a procession from the UN to the Central Park. We'll post some pictures.

Watching the very insane Manhattan public access television right now... sad, strange, bizarre stuff... wonderful, really- wish LA had something like this-maybe it does , we don't have cable back at the compound.

This has been a great trip. Didn't see much of New York, be we're all over this block of MacDougal Street. $2 falafels will keep you alive... for awhile...

Erin Go F Yourself

Why am I up so early? It's because in New York, in the wintertime, on the 4th floor of one of these old buildings, YOU CAN'T CONTROL THE HEAT, so it's friggin' broiling in this apartment. And it's freezing out side. I was cooked last night. I'm also a litte hungover (see previous post)

How's this for f-ed up: The NYFD
won't let their firemen wear green berets in the parade today. Haven't heard a good reason why yet.

In Caly-For-Nee-Ya, Gov. Robot calls these people a "special interest group."

I'm getting drunk

Wouldn't you know, my back is hurting me? Luckily, the nice person we are subletting from left me some back medicine:

This sublet is PERFECT. It's is two doors down from the theater, and right next door to the Cafe Reggio, where we picked up the key today. And had a nice little breakfast.

I painted a set wall, we went on an errand. We are helping out. But my back hurts, so what the hell- when in Rome, eh? So I'm drinking before I go watch the tech/dress. Why not? It's what New Yorkers do. They drink. And tomorrow is St. Paddy's day. I'm getting a head shtart... woopee!

Next Stop, Greenwich Village

Greenwich Village by Steve McGee

We'll be Dodging again, this time returning to NYC- fans of the blog might recall (Dodgeheads? You know who you are, and we love you you for it) that the editorial staff of DtA were in residence in New York on 9/11/01.

But we were living in mid-town, and I've got to tell you, living on a shoestring in mid-town, near the Port Authority and Times Square, is not really very much fun. I mean, it's mid-town. Yawn.

But we've got a mission to the Village, a sweet, sweet sublet (well, we still have to see it, but the location is nice) and Momma just got a residual check that bankrolls the whole excursion.

We're packing light, doing some theater (helping a friend birth his baby, really) and ready to just goof off in New York.

Pictures and bloggery will be forthcoming and comingforth.

Hey kids, for extra credit, visit the Greenwich Village Society for Historic Preservation

This could be handy:

(By the way, we had dinner at Cheebo on Sunset last night in LA with V and were pleasantly surprised.)

If it's Sunday, it must be time to bitch about religious nuts

Oh, to have been able to attend the National Religious Broadcasters conference.

We watch alot of TBN- it's funny, but it's also an exercise in genuine inquiry- I would love to hear something on religious television that actually seems to be ... religious. But it all sounds alot like the other crap that's on late-night broadcast TV. You can barely tell the difference between Praise The Lord and the other ponzi-scheme get-rich-quick infomercials out there. And in the case of The Ramp, I thought I was watching a Girls Gone Wild ad one night. The young woman "testifying" appeared to be masturbating. Onanism! On the tee vee!

This morning we were listening to Background Briefing with Ian Masters on KPFK. We were treated to Max Blumenthal's report from the NRB conference. Read his article Air Jesus here at mediatransparency.org.

Bus 19 on display.

Bus 19 was at the NRB conference. It's a sad, creepy tool used by the Rapture Right EndTimers to drum up sympathy for Israel (which we have in abundance- we have it for Palestinians, too , though, so I guess our goose is cooked come the Rapture.)
